Lincoln Center’s Nordic Next series celebrates the inventive, boundary-pushing artistry of the Nordic countries. This special performance begins with musicians from the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center presenting music by some of the Nordic countries' most acclaimed composers from past and present, including Serenata in vano by Denmark’s Carl Nielsen, Grand Septet by Sweden’s Franz Berwald, and Spectra by Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir. Following the performance, the Festival Orchestra musicians will gather for a short Q&A, joined by Finnish pop folk star Vilma Jää, most recently seen starring in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Saariaho’s Innocence. Jää continues the night's entertainment with a set rooted in personal history and drawing on ancient Finno-Ugric traditions that reach from Northern Europe deep into Siberia. Her sound is bracingly modern, while her lyrics bring a distinctly feminist perspective to age-old themes.

Nordic Next is presented in collaboration with the Consulates General of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden in New York, and with the Embassy of Iceland in Washington, D.C., with additional support from the American-Scandinavian Foundation.
