Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. Thus begins Brahms’ choral masterpiece, Ein deutsches Requiem, a beautiful human response to grief. The great Requiems of Mozart, Verdi, and Fauré are Latin masses praying for the eternal rest of the deceased. Brahms chose instead to focus on the survivors who mourn by using Biblical texts translated into his everyday language, and in doing so created one of the most profoundly universal music statements of the 19th century, performed here by this renowned German orchestra firmly in the Brahmsian tradition.
