“It's sometimes hard to remember that there was a theatrical BC: a time before Complicite.” —The Observer (London)
This groundbreaking work embraces the universal relevance of math, which often permeates the most unlikely of scenarios. A Disappearing Number, which won the Laurence Olivier Award for best new play (2008), revolves around the mathematical and spiritual nature of infinity, which becomes the link between two mathematicians: one an established Cambridge professor, G.H. Hardy, the other a young, autodidactic genius from India, Srinivasa Ramanujan.
Simon McBurney's theater company, Complicite, returns after its 2004 Lincoln Center Festival performance of The Elephant Vanishes, to bring its multimedia artistry to a scientific subject, hypnotically blurring the lines between quantitative and creative matter. The production's recorded soundscape is mathematically propelled, featuring original music by Nitin Sawhney and works from an eclectic group of composers and musicians.
Coproduced by Complicite, Barbicanbite07, Ruhrfestspiele, Weiner Festwochen, and Holland Festival, in association with Theatre Royal Plymouth
