Harlem Samba

The young drummers of Frederick Douglass Academy’s Harlem Samba, under the direction of Dana Monteiro, bring the sounds of Rio’s exuberant carnival baterias to the streets of New York.

The Harlem Samba Brazilian percussion ensemble is a group of students and alumni from the Frederick Douglass Academy, a high performing public school in Harlem. Modeled after the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro, Harlem Samba performs the traditional rhythms of the Brazilian carnival. Its mission is to teach personal and academic discipline through the study of music. Many of the group’s college-bound members have traveled to Brazil as part of an exchange program with a Brazilian high school. Harlem Samba is directed by Dana Monteiro.
