Great Pianists Play Chopin on Film Program 1: Arthur Rubinstein
Saturday, February 06, 2010 2:00 PM Walter Reade Theater
In 1964 Arthur Rubinstein gave a recital in Moscow playing Chopin’s Barcarolle, selected Etudes, and Polonaise, Op. 53. Ten years later, Rubinstein filmed Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the London Symphony Orchestra and André Previn conducting. These two films are paired with a silent film of Vladimir Horowitz, Alfred Cortot, Wilhelm Backhaus, and Robert Casadesus playing a Chopin Etude in real time, as well as in slow motion. The purpose is to illustrate the desired finger technique. Directed by Louta Nouneberg.
This film is part of the Great Pianists Play Chopin on Film series.
Presented by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in association with the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
