Karita Mattila in the title role of Puccini's Tosca Celebrating 50 Years of the Met2009–2010 SeasonMetropolitan Opera HouseOn the heels of its own 125th anniversary celebration, the Metropolitan Opera is pleased to pay tribute to Lincoln Center’s 50 years of artistic excellence. For a third of the Met’s history, the company has made its home at Lincoln Center, where the new Met opened in 1966 with the world premiere of Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra, starring Leontyne Price and Justino Díaz. Next season, on the occasion of Lincoln Center’s 50th Anniversary, the Met will present 17 operas that have been in the company repertory for 50 years or more. One of these—Puccini’s Tosca—will open the season in a new production starring Karita Mattila and conducted by Met Music Director James Levine. The Met will honor Lincoln Center during the 2009–2010 season with exhibitions of costumes from important productions from the past 50 years, and with radio and editorial tributes to major figures—from artists to Board members—who have been involved with the company for half a century or more.
