Michael Friedman: Adventures in Reality featuring de’Adre Aziza, Michael Esper, Caitlin Miller, Sherie Rene Scott, and Benjamin Walker
“[Michael Friedman] has a reputation for fluency in a variety of musical styles—pop, salsa, rock and folk among them—while critics have singled out his lyrics for their playful comic images layered atop potent emotional messages.”—The New York Times
Saturday, January 30 at 8:30 The Allen Room
Theatrical composer and lyricist Michael Friedman presents Adventures in Reality, a series of songs based on real dialogue from everyday people and historical figures. A founder of the downtown theater troupe The Civilians, which keeps a close eye on contemporary society with a bit of humor, Friedman is joined by de’Adre Aziza of the radical rock musical Passing Strange and Sherie Rene Scott, among other guests.
This performance is approximately 80 minutes, with no intermission.
The New York Times, January 31, 2010 "Although much of his music is cheerful and bouncy, his lyrics are skeptical, leaning toward pessimism often camouflaged as playfulness. But he is also an adept composer in a post-Motown pop style and can do a mean pastiche of the acerbic Brecht-Weill standards...All these contradictions made for a bracing, extremely eclectic evening of theater music."
